Please start us off by introducing yourself and telling us a bit about Pyro Studios.
| | Ignacio: |
My name is Ignacio Pérez Dolset and I am Pyro Studios Director and Commandos 3 Head of Design.
Pyro Studios was founded in 1996 by my brother Javier and myself and has released since then Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines and Commandos 2 as well as Praetorians.
We are currently working on four games with Commandos 3 as the most imminent release.

Firstly, please tell us about the three campaigns found in Commandoes 3.
| | Ignacio: |
The game will start in Stalingrad where the first campaign takes place, In this campaign the player will have to kill an elite enemy sniper, protect a general from an assault of German paratroopers, etc... and will end up the campaign through a series of events having to kill a Nazi general preparing an ambush in the middle of Berlin.
The second campaign will take place in the French-German border where the player will have to take control of a train to recover a shipment of art masterpieces that the nazis have stolen from Paris.
The last campaign will take place around D-Day landings and will include not only a mission where the player will have to take a beach but also sabotage and infiltration operations.

Purely in terms of gameplay mechanics, what has been added or tweaked to the formula established in the two previous Commandoes?
| | Ignacio: |
The game now is much more dynamic. The situations evolve, the enemy reacts, the context changes to provide an experience with much more adrenaline. It will still be a strategy game where clever thinking and choosing the right tactic will be the key for success but all this is packed on a very different way to previous Commandos games to provide a much more immersive and rewarding experience.
Also all the mission design has been changed to provide the player with a great variety of situations in the game. The missions are very different among them, with not only infiltration missions but also ambushes, assaults, countdown missions, etc...

It’s been stated that Commandoes 3 will try to deliver a more cinematic experience as well as one that provides the gamer with more freedom. Please give us a glimpse at a mission that typifies these changes.
| | Ignacio: |
For example there will be a mission where the player will have to defend the Russian headquarters in Stalingrad from the assault of Nazi paratroopers. There is hundreds of ways to solve this from the most defensive approaches establishing a defensive parameter and waiting for the enemy to attack to the most aggressive ones trying to kill the enemies on their own and well defended positions before they attack.

Pyro’s aim to give Commandoes 3 a more cinematic feel implies the inclusion of a deeper story. Will this be the case and, if so, how will the story be told over the course of the game (FMV, in-game cut scenes, etc.)?
| | Ignacio: |
The idea was having a story but that had very deep implications in what was happening in the game and on the game mechanics. The game story is told in such a way that there is very few dialogues and we relay more in the in game cinematics and always with the idea that the story alters the actual game and has a big impact on what is happening trough the actual game.

Please tell us a bit about the multiplayer features available in Commandoes 3.
| | Ignacio: |
There will be a number of deathmatch modes available ranging for a more strategic ones to other more action oriented. Basically the game is based around teams of Commandos where from two to four teams (and up to twelve players) will be playing one against the other on capture the flag mode, score based games, etc....

How long do you anticipate that it will take the average gamer to play through Commandoes 3 and what do you feel will add replay value?
| | Ignacio: |
It will depend very much on the gamer we expect the game to last around 20 hours to a good Commandos player.
We believe that there is a high replayability in the game due to the many hidden surprises on it and the many different ways to progress through it. Also the multiplayer element adds a high replayability to Commandos 3.

With much of Commandoes 2’s graphics engine having been re-hauled/replaced for part 3, what has this allowed you to add in the visuals department and how has this affected Commandoes 3’s gameplay?
| | Ignacio: |
Basically it allowed us to a much more detailed environments lots of new effects: explosions, weather and all sort of particle effects. With this we have created a world that it is really immersive, maps that are alive and transport the player to the middle of the action.
From a gameplay point of view these changes have allowed us to produce a game which has grown from a gameplay mechanics point of view from one to five versus Commandos 2 with lots of different game situations, a much better enemy AI, many more enemies on screen, etc...

Lastly, considering the popularity of the Commandoes series and an expressed interest in moving away from its core gameplay, where do you see the Commandoes series two years from now and how was it decided to end the series as it’s currently known?
| | Ignacio: |
We felt that three games were enough. After Commandos 3 we feel that we have pushed the boundaries of this genre to the limit and that it would be difficult to make something better so we have decided to do something different. It is time to move to some new areas and explore into new gameplay possibilities very different to what we have done in the Commandos games.
|
| GCM: |
Thank you for your time! Would you care to close this Q&A with any last thoughts?
| | Ignacio: |
Not really. Commandos 3 will be out very soon and we hope that you enjoy it.
