Game Chronicles takes a look at this totally addicting race-action title in our featured GCM interview with Producer, Randy King.

GCM: Thank you for your time! Please get us started by introducing yourself and telling us about the creative team working on Stuntman for the next-generation. Anybody onboard from the original Reflections team from 2002?

RK: I’m Randy King, Producer on Stuntman: Ignition. The development team working on Ignition was full of talented people in all areas; design, art and programming. We actually began with a core set of working mechanics from the original game, and were able to create some pretty exciting and addicting new features for this next-gen release.

GCM: The original Stuntman was perhaps one of the most addicting (if not frustrating) games ever created. Why did it take nearly five years for a sequel to get made?

RK: This project included a typical set of challenges for the team, as well as some new and interesting ones, such as the Stuntman property and publisher changing hands mid-development. THQ was really behind the brand and had great expectations for what it could be. We worked together to make sure we had the right amount of time to make a truly satisfying sequel. Good things do take time…..

GCM: After playing the Xbox Live demo for Stuntman: Ignition, then going back and playing the original Stuntman, it seems that a lot of the core elements (stunts) are being used in this new version. What new types of stunts are being introduces in Ignition?

RK: We have added quite a few new stunts; drift, two wheeling, reverse 180, take a bump, and wheelie to name a few but the main mechanic we added is allowing the player to create their own stunts. What you do between director stunts is up to you throw in a close, take a gap, catch air doing this will increase your multiplier which increases your overall score.

GCM: The original Stuntman demanded almost flawless perfection from start to finish of any stunt sequence. Then Chase came along and offered a more Tony Hawk-style objective-based approach to stunt driving. Where does Ignition fit into this mix of styles and gameplay?

RK: Stuntman: Ignition uses the first Stuntman as a foundation and addresses the issues it had. We have added in a new addictive scoring mechanic and a strike system that allows the player room for error. The gameplay is not objective based but more score driven and allows players to post their scores on the leaderboards for ultimate bragging rights.

GCM: As far as content, how many different movies and what kind of genres can we expect in this new Stuntman and about how many stunt sequences per movie?

RK: We have a total of 6 unique movies with 6 scenes in each. Here are a few themes we have a small town natural disaster movie. The Volcano erupts and all hell breaks loose. There is a retro 70’s style cop thriller called Overdrive. The Creek brothers are back in a follow up sequel from the original stuntman. Whoopin’ and a Hollerin 2 this movie will have tons of hillbilly hi-jinx. We have also added local and online multiplayer that has 3 different modes and lots of options to change. The multiplayer levels all take place on a big Hollywood Studio backlot were you can perform insane stunts on 4 movie sets. We also have brought back Stunt Constructor and allowing the player to place hundreds and hundreds of props, ramps, explosive etc….

GCM: What, if any, real movies were used as inspiration for coming up with the stunts in Ignition?

RK: There were no certain movies in particular but pretty much the entire Hollywood Movie scene and huge over the top stunts.

GCM: Were any Hollywood resources (stuntmen, directors, etc.) brought in to consult on this game?

RK: We did have a stuntman consultant James Cheeks he was key to helping us capture what it’s like to be a rookie stuntman and climb your way to the top of the film industry. I personally had the opportunity be a passenger and do 360’s, 180’s, drifting and 2 wheeling nothing but adrenaline!

GCM: The only thing more fun than actually doing the stunts in these games is watching them in the replays. Real stunts are covered with multiple cameras. Will the player have the ability to choose coverage angles and essentially direct (or edit) their own version of the replay?

RK: We don’t allow the player to set up the cameras in career mode but in Stunt Constructor you will have the ability to create your own stunt arena and are able to place tons of cameras anywhere you like. It’s very rewarding to sit back and watch your very own movie. We also have Trailers for each movie once you complete all of the scenes you can watch the movie trailer with all of your mega stunts.

GCM: Will it be possible to save and share clips or even entire replays with our friends online?

RK: You will be able to upload your entire replays when you get a high enough score, and you can also upload your stunt constructor arenas you have created.

GCM: What kind of Achievements can we expect to find in this new Stuntman? Any particular favorites?

RK: We have 50 achievements in the game with objectives ranging from “Earn 1 star in all overdrive movies to Steal 100,000 point in Multiplayer. A personal favorite of mine is “String’n King” Get your multiplier to X100 in any movie scene it’s challenging but very rewarding when you unlock this achievement.

GCM: The name “Ignition” implies a lot of driving, but after the original Stuntman on the PS2 and Chase: Hollywood Stunt Driver on the Xbox, a lot of stuntmen will tell you that they do more than drive. Any plans for non-vehicle stunts, either in this game or possibly a future release?

RK: Stuntman: Ignition is vehicle based but you never know what the future might hold.

GCM: Without giving away any secrets, what is your personal favorite stunt sequence in Ignition?

RK: Big air and over the top huge jumps oh did I mention big air! It feels great when your airborne it really gets your adrenaline going. My personal favorite is a building top nitrous jump through a large helicopter about 10 stories up it’s a lot of fun and looks amazing during the replay.

GCM: Thanks for your time. Do you have any final thoughts or top-secret info about Stuntman: Ignition you want to share with our readers?

RK: Keep your eyes peeled for downloadable content in the future and in Freestyle mode be creative; you don’t always have to follow the arrows because, after all, it’s freestyle mode. Enjoy!
