Aby Escape The other day I was playing Temple Run and I kept saying to myself, “this game is great but how much cooler would it be if there were no temples and my main character was a raccoon wearing sneakers getting chased by a bunch or rednecks?” Well, BulkyPix must have been reading my mind because let me introduce you to Abe Escape, a game with a running, sneaker-wearing raccoon being chased by rednecks.
Controls are simple and just as identical to Temple Run as the premise itself. Aby is continuously running forward through whatever scenery each level gives you; sometimes the woods, sometimes a city, down a street, etc. You swipe up to jump over low obstacles and swipe down to slide under high ones. You tilt your iPad or iPhone to either side to steer left and right to avoid other obstacles and collect tennis shoes to keep your energy level up and coins…lots of coins. Coins are used to unlock items and power-ups within the store as well as purchase the 30-level Story mode. I was slightly annoyed by this at first until I realized Aby Escape is a free game, and for only $2.99 you can purchase enough coins to unlock the story mode (7,500 coins) with 2,500 coins left over. By doing this BulkyPix is letting you decide if you want to pay for the full game right away or earn your way to the premium story mode through some dedicated play in the Unlimited mode. There are also some annoying marketing gimmicks that will allow you to earn extra coins by watching movies and subscribing to third-party services. But back to the game… There are 50 challenges in the Unlimited mode, more than enough to keep you busy for weeks and eventually earn the coins necessary to unlock the Story mode that will add 30 new levels to the mix. I really enjoyed the variety in the game with all sorts of crazy people chasing you like hunters, policemen, bikers, footballers, elephants, and all sorts of fun power-ups to help you escape them like Ghost, Magnet, Extra life, Shield, etc. My only real issue with the game was the responsiveness to the tilting. Even with a full-on 45-degree tilt on my iPad Aby never seemed to steer clear of an obstacle in time, especially if I was collecting a line of coins from the opposite side of the path. I tried playing on my iPhone (this is a universal app) and while the response was slightly better, I just couldn’t get the jump and slide timing down on the smaller screen. It would be nice if they could add a sensitivity slider to the options. Personally, Aby Escape came out at just the right time. I love Temple Run and games like Temple Run but was getting pretty tired of that game. This is a fresh visual take on the classic run-until-you’re-caught gameplay loaded with charm, great art style, cheery music, and addictive gameplay. And best of all, it’s free unless you want to pay to unlock stuff faster. Screenshots ![]() ![]()
