  • RollOut HD puts a twist on the platform puzzle genre by putting the player in control of the environments rather than the main character. The game has already been out for a while on the iPhone but now it makes its debut on the iPad and with the larger screen, it seems to play better than ever.

The iPad version includes 60 challenging levels that could takes weeks or even months to complete, especially if you are going for those trophies or top spots on the leaderboards. The premise is simple; you control the speed of a linear sequence of icons or power-ups that will affect Wabba, the crazed little black fur ball who is trying to escape each level. Wabba is on a preset course and will only change speed or direction when he touches an icon, so it is up to you to time those “collisions” perfectly so he can reach each exit.

The visuals are simple and reminded me of those Scrubbing Bubble commercials, since the backgrounds look like bathroom tile and Wabba looks a bit like a dirty soap bubble (with fangs). The music is simple and repetitive and even a bit annoying after a bit, but you can always play your own music.

It takes a bit of time to grasp the concept of indirectly controlling a character by manipulating the world around that character, and even when you figure out the basics the game continues to up the challenge with increasingly clever level and puzzle designs. RollOut HD is a total blast; a game that will make you think long and hard for as long as it takes to complete it.
